What Is An MOT?

MOT Test Centre Oldham

The MOT is a vehicle test. It’s a legal requirement to ensure that vehicles on the UK roads meet minimum safety and emission standards. It improves the safety of all road users and helps keep pollution in check. Driving a car older than 3 years without a valid MOT certificate is illegal. Don’t take it lightly because you may end up paying a £1,000 fine.

A new private car should get its first MOT certificate before it completes 3 years from the date of registration. For some other categories like emergency vehicles and taxis, the certificate must be obtained within a year of registration.

Only approved test centres like the one at Volksmaster are authorised to perform MOT tests. During the test, your car will undergo a series of checks and if it passes these checks, your MOT certificate will be issued. If there are defects, you have to get it rectified at a garage of your choice and retake the test. You are under no obligation to use Volksmaster to instigate repairs in order to bring your vehicle inline to pass the MOT.

Checks Performed During The MOT

During the MOT, qualified technicians check your car including its interiors and exteriors for safety or emission issues. Here are some common checks that you can expect at your MOT.

  • Condition of your seats and seat adjustments.
  • Condition of your seatbelts. Seatbelts should be in good condition, should latch and unlatch properly and should lock when tugged.
  • Operation of the horn.
  • Condition of your windscreen. Cracks and chips are serious problems if they are large or are obstructing the driver’s view. Any problem in the wiper’s sweep zone may result in a failed test.
  • Condition and effectiveness of the wipers.
  • Level of the windscreen washer fluid.
  • Operation of doors and windows, including the locks.
  • Condition and functioning of the mirrors.
  • Operation and effectiveness of lights, including headlight aim and turning indicators.
  • Lights and indicators on the dashboard. Your car will not pass if the check engine light is coming on or if there is some other warning light that indicates a serious issue.
  • Rust or serious damage on the body.
  • Condition and legibility of the number plates.
  • Type of tyres installed, tyre condition and tread depth. Tyres should be inflated to the recommended pressures.
  • Brake test using a roller brake tester.
  • Condition of the exhaust system. There should be no cracks, leaks or unusual noises and the emissions should be within limits.
  • Condition of the steering and suspension.
  • Condition of the fuel system including the fuel tank and fuel cap.

Preparing For The MOT

A large number of MOT failures are due to silly reasons like a non-functioning lamp or badly-placed sticker on the windscreen that’s obstructing the driver’s view. To avoid such problems, perform some basic checks before taking your car for the test. At Volksmaster, we offer a quick preliminary check to detect common problems. This improves your chances of passing the test at your first attempt.
