ADAS Calibration, Check & Service

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are automation systems to make vehicles safer. Many manufacturers now provide ADAS features as part of standard equipment in their later models. If your car has ADAS features, the system will need calibration when certain types of repairs like windscreen replacement are performed. For repairs or calibration of ADAS in Bury, Oldham Manchester and the surrounding areas, you can depend on Volksmaster. We are one of the very few garages in the North West outside of the main dealer to offer this service.

How ADAS Makes Your Car Safer

ADAS has many features and each one is designed to reduce the possibility or severity of a particular type of accident. The type of system installed, the way it operates and the safety features available on a vehicle can vary between manufacturers and models.

Most ADAS features are designed to warn or take automatic corrective action when the possibility of an accident is detected. It works by using a set of cameras, radars, infrared sensors and other equipment to detect or correct potentially dangerous situations. Here are some common ADAS features.

1. Adaptive cruise control

This system is designed to prevent your car from colliding with a vehicle in front of you. It ensures a safe distance between your car and the vehicle ahead. The way the system operates can vary. It could be radar based or camera based.

2. Adaptive headlights

Adaptive headlights is a feature that tries to improve visibility in low-light conditions. It takes its cues from the way you use the steering wheel, estimate available light using cameras and tries to ensure that your path is adequately lit.

3. Autonomous emergency braking

This system uses lidar, radar or cameras to anticipate possible collisions. In situations of imminent danger, it automatically applies the brakes to slow the car down. This helps prevent the accident or lessen its impact.

4. Blindspot awareness

This radar-based feature alerts you when a vehicle is in your blind spot and reduces the chances of lane change accidents.

5. Lane-departure warning

This is a camera-based system that alerts you when you stray out of your lane. It warns you either by an audible alarm or a vibration in the steering wheel.

6. Traffic sign recognition

This camera-based feature reduces the chances of missing a traffic sign. It displays an alert on the dashboard whenever a road sign is detected.

7. Pedestrian alert and collision avoidance

Improves safety by taking action when there is a possibility of the car hitting a pedestrian.

8. Rear-collision warning

This feature helps you avoid being hit by a vehicle from behind.

9. Park assist

This feature helps you park accurately without bumping into neighbouring vehicles or objects.

The Need For ADAS Calibration

Parking with ADAS

ADAS features depend on cameras, radars and other detectors to monitor road conditions and detect danger before taking action. These systems will work correctly only if the sensors and other equipment is accurately aligned with respect to the direction of the vehicle. When these components are displaced due to accidents or repairs, realignment is necessary for correct functioning of the system.

Many manufacturers require calibration checks even after a simple adjustment like a wheel alignment because it could upset the alignment of the sensors for lane departure and adaptive cruise control. Similarly, a windscreen replacement can change the angle of the cameras on which many features like adaptive headlights and lane departure warning depend on.

Where To Get ADAS Calibrated

The facility for ADAS calibration may not be available in all garages. It requires clear floor space to park the car and position the equipment. Special equipment, software, support, training and documentation from the manufacturer is also needed. The requirements are not standard and it can vary from one manufacturer and model to another. A significant investment is needed, especially for European cars, something that can be beyond the budget of a small garage.
