Why Is It Important To Check The Bottom Of A Vehicle

One reason for using a good garage for periodic service is its service quality. A full-service garage has the equipment and trained mechanics to check your car properly. One piece of equipment that is commonly used is the lift. It is used to raise the vehicle so that the underside can be checked. But is this really necessary? Here are five reasons why your garage puts your car on the lift.

To Inspect The Tyres

For safety, comfort and fuel efficiency, your tyres should be in good condition. A good garage will make tyre inspection a part of periodic service. Lifting the vehicle allows the mechanic to inspect the tyres closely. The wheels can be rotated and all parts of the tyre can be checked properly. Doing this reduces your chances of getting stuck on the road with a flat tyre.

Once the car is raised, the mechanic will check each tyre for correct fitting, tread wear, defects like bulges and minute cracks caused due to dry rot. Dry rot is a possibility if your tyres are over six years old and you use the vehicle sparingly. The mechanic will also check the tyre walls for damage. Finally, the tyre valves and tyre pressures will be checked.

To Detect Wheel And Suspension Problems

Lifting the vehicle allows the mechanic to check the wheels and suspension of your car. Problems with the suspension like loose or worn parts and impact damage will be easier to detect when the vehicle is raised. The mechanic will also be able to spot problems like leaking shock absorbers, struts and steering parts.

To Inspect The Exhaust System

The exhaust system has many components that are interconnected. They are prone to rust. Lifting the vehicle allows a closer look at these components to assess their condition. Any loose clamps and brackets can be identified and fixed. Any necessary preventive maintenance can also be performed at the same time.

To Look For And Fix Dislodged Parts

There are many parts on the underside of the car that can get dislodged or broken. The exhaust heat shield is one such item. If it rusts, it can get dislodged and hang down.

The bottom of your car has several plastic shields, which make the underside more aerodynamic. They are of various shapes and sizes depending on what they are covering. Plastic shields can get damaged or dislodged when you hit the pavement or some other obstructions like parking safety blocks. They can also get damaged if you drive over something that hits or scrapes the underside of your vehicle.

If a plastic shield gets dislodged, air flowing under the running vehicle will force it down further. It can also come off due to vibrations. Detecting the problem early can save you some money. If the problem is found early, it may be possible to secure the part with retainers or clips. If the part is broken or cannot be reliably fixed, replacement will be needed. Raising the vehicle during service helps the mechanic detect such problems and you will save the cost of an expensive repair.

To Remove Stuck Road Debris

Sometimes, debris from the road can get stuck on the underside of your vehicle. Raising the vehicle helps detect and remove any foreign material before it causes any problems.

The most common foreign objects picked up by vehicles are plastic trash bags. They can get caught on the exhaust system if you drive over them or if the wind blows them under your car. These bags can melt easily if they come in contact with hot components like the front pipe or catalytic converters of the exhaust system.

If you notice a strong burning smell outside your vehicle, it’s probably due to a melting plastic bag. The solution is to have the bag removed as soon as possible. If the bag has melted, it will not be easy to remove it fully as the burning plastic sticks to the underside components. The longer the bag remains under the vehicle, the higher the difficulty.
